Fantascope (Also known as the Phenakistiscope)
The Fantascope involved spinning a cardboard disc that was vertically attached at the handle. Spread around the disc's center were a variety of pictures that showed different phases of animation. The cardboard disc was also cut into equally spaced slits, and by spinning the disc and looking through these slits the pictures gave off the illusion of animation. The user would then place the Fantascope in front of a mirror and begin to spin it and by skimming the slits it would keep the images from blurring together. This rapid succession of images on the disc produced an effect like that which is shown below. Due to the set-up of this device it was only realistically usable by one person at a time limiting it's use but still a major contribution in terms of conceptual ideas towards motion films. [10]
